This Nutcracker was a particularly memorable project. After my costume sketches were approved and fabrics were purchased, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, bringing everything to a sudden halt. Production was paused for nearly a year.

During that uncertain time, New York’s costume shops were in crisis—work had dried up, and permanent closure seemed imminent. That’s when Gil Boggs, Colorado Ballet’s artistic director, contacted me to see what we could do, and together, we decided to resume production to help keep the shops going.

The staff in Colorado provided whatever measurements they had, and we moved forward on creating the hundreds of costumes without fittings. We shipped the finished costumes to Colorado, where they remained until it was safe again to travel. Nearly a year later, we were finally able to complete fittings in person.

It was a privilege to create this beautiful production while sustaining many of the remarkable makers behind the scenes.
