About This Project
Maria Tallchief came to NY to coach this ballet that "George" had made on her. Traditionally the costumes were "Bluuuuuuue" with lots of jewels. Peter had wanted me to come up with something as far away as possible from what one would expect. I chose a soft tutu with flowers in a salmon world for Kyra Nichols. The man (Nikolaj Hübbe) was brick. No crown, no jewels. No comment on opening night from Maria but when she was honored at Kennedy Center for the Kennedy Center Honors, she requested that Margaret Tracey (NYCB) and Angel Correa (ABT) wear my designs for TV. A very nice compliment. Years later when Suzanne received an honors I sat at Suzanne's table with Maria. I went over to reintroduce myself and she said "I knoooow who you are!" She was in a wheel chair and very frail.
