About This Project

Designing The Flaming Lips: The Ballet for Ryan Jolicoeur-Nye at Oklahoma City Ballet was an unforgettable adventure. The music—vibrant, iconic, and deeply tied to the spirit of Oklahoma—set the tone for everything. I created stretch-fabric tutus that flared over hooping, glowing almost like day-glo halos, perfectly matching the surreal energy of the piece. That movement featured three ballerinas (in the stretch tutus dancing inside giant plastic bubbles (they could breath in them for only 6 minutes or so.) The bubbles were a visual nod to the band’s signature stagecraft. Most moving of all was a section performed by individuals with Parkinson’s disease, dancing in chairs alongside their teachers. It was a joyful, human, and profoundly hopeful collaboration.
